What PG Diploma awards
A postgraduate diploma in one management field, awarded by the university or institute running it. Postgraduate in level, single-subject in scope.
Duration
One year, usually two semesters. Roughly half the credit load of a two-year programme, with the general-management breadth removed and the specialisation kept.
Eligibility
A bachelor’s degree. Some programmes prefer relevant work experience for the specialisation concerned but rarely insist on it. No entrance examination in most cases.
Who this route is for
You already hold a postgraduate degree.
This is the strongest case for the route. You do not need a second master’s; you need one field added, and this adds it in a year.
You are changing function, not level.
Moving from operations into finance is a specialisation problem, not a seniority problem.
You want postgraduate depth without a two-year commitment.
The syllabus goes deeper into one area than an MBA does, because it spends none of its time on breadth.
When it is the wrong choice. If you have no postgraduate qualification and want the credential recruitment rules name, this is not a substitute for an MBA or a PGDM. It is depth, not standing.
The rule that actually applies
Where a university awards a diploma in distance or online mode, its distance-education entitlement is still the thing to check. Where an autonomous institute awards its own PG diploma, the institute’s standing is what you are relying on. Ask which of the two you are buying — the brochure often will not say plainly.
What it costs
Usually well under ₹1,00,000, and often a third to a half of a two-year programme at the same institution. Compare on total fee including examination and certificate charges, not on the per-semester figure.

PG Diploma: common questions
- Is a PG Diploma equal to a master’s degree?
- No. It is a postgraduate-level qualification but it is not a master’s degree, and it does not substitute for one where a degree is specifically required.
- Can a PG Diploma be converted into an MBA?
- Some universities allow credit transfer from their own PG diploma into their MBA. It is institution-specific and never automatic — get the pathway in writing before you enrol if that is your plan.
- Is one year enough to change careers?
- For a functional move within an industry you already know, usually yes. For a simultaneous change of both function and industry, a full two-year programme gives you more to argue with.
- Does it need UGC-DEB entitlement?
- If a university awards it in distance or online mode, that entitlement is what you check. If an autonomous institute awards its own diploma, the DEB mechanism does not apply.
